About Robin Woodman |
Connecting to One's Heritage |
Robin “Tyra” Woodman has been part of the reenactment community for over 10 years now and wouldn’t have it any other way. Having Norwegian roots on both sides of her family and being a member of Sons of Norway, she was looking for more in-depth knowledge of her heritage. If her dear friend Katla hadn’t asked her about Sons of Norway and had an interest in her heritage as well, they would never have run into
The Vikings of Bjornstad reenactment group and joined up. It turned out to be exactly what Tyra needed as it satiated her desire to connect with her heritage.
She loves that she has new friends that are like minded and that they feel like family. Reenactment has inspired her to learned to spin, dye fiber and fabric with plants (foraged and purchased), build a warp weighted loom to weave on, make clothing and use Viking age techniques for making jewelry with Trichinopoly and bone carving. But there is always more to learn about! This has also encouraged her to keep more contact with family in Norway and visit there as often as she can. When she goes to Norway now, after visiting family she volunteers in Viking Valley, Gudvangen, Norway as a Viking reenactor, one of her favorite things she has been able to participate in. The people in the village are a wealth of knowledge of all things Viking age and to live the life they did on a daily basis is wonderful. Tyra loves to camp and to ride horses when she can. She is also an ordained minister with a PhD in Metaphysical Sciences, with a base in theology and psychology. She puts this into practice by officiating weddings and funerals, and creates ritual and ceremony for spiritual healing and end of life transitions. She has also pursued the study of the spiritual practices, the practice of magic and seiðr in the Viking age as well. |
We will leave you with one of Tyra’s favorite historical poetic references to weaving: |
“The warp is woven with warriors guts, and heavily weighted with the heads of men. Spears serve as heddle rods, spattered with blood; Iron-bound is the shed rod. And arrows are the pin beaters; We will beat with swords our battle web.” |
