Very little is known about “Viking music” but we do have a few clues. From a 10th century manuscript describing a Viking funeral in Russia we know that some sort of stringed instrument was played. Viking sagas also mention stringed instruments and they tell us something about the nature of the music. So lyres, flutes, early harps and bowed instruments are all good choices. In addition to the few religious tunes from the Viking area that survive, traditional music can give us clues as well. Vikings would also have been exposed to the music of every area of Europe. This course will discuss what we know and what we do not know and suggest ways in which to reconstruct “Viking music.“
Hors d'oeuvres will be provided.
If you have food sensitivities, please let Sandra know. She plans to
keep it low sodium, and no garlic or onion.
