Solvang Danish Days Festival
19 - 21 September 2025
Solvang is a town in California's Central Valley that was founded by Danish settlers and has proven very capable of continuing that Scandinavian heritage. It annual Danish Days Festival provides an immersive experience with parades, music, dancing, art, entertainment, æbleskivers, and, courtesy of the Vikings of Bjornstad, a pretty substantial demonstration of what life looked like 1100 years ago. The photos below were taken by members of our group.

The Vikings of Bjornstad - in Solvang, California

It's gonna be a tough portage

Will and Marilou get ready for the crush of visitors

They're well armed

Solvang's longship provides an appropriate, if smallish, backdrop

PJ's enjoying the day

As always, children love Bjornstad's treasure display

Jack tells them stories about the coins and bits of jewelry

Some visitors really like having their picture taken

And so do their sisters

Denise and Rick demonstrate games and display a little jewelry

Robin and Maryella have a well-stocked tent

Robin demonstrates combing wool as an example of life in Viking times

Maryella enjoying the day

There's a lot of entertainment for the crowd

Being next to the bandstand was its own challenge

Some entertainment gigs are harder to get out of than others

It took a while - and a few punchlines - but he made it

Among other attractions during Danish Days, you could have your runes read

Elder Futhark runes. We checked.

Legos and shade. Not a bad combination on a warm day.

A full downtown and park - with people in all directions

Just some of Bjornstad's growing collection of swords and shields

Will, Marilou and Sandra staying in the shade

Some days just have an edge to them

PJ looks toward the horizon

A lot of Viking gear on display

The Isle of Lewis chess set makes an appearance

Robin talks about textiles and weaving

There's even Viking food

And the visitors are fascinated

Jack describes our reproduction of the Stora Hammars I runestone - and its depiction of Hjaðningavíg, the saga of Hildr and the Everlasting Battle

For some reason, the shade kept moving, so we kept moving under the canvas...

You can't make cloth - or sails - without a loom

Will and Marilou's tent makes its first appearance
